Description

Motivation

The global gaming industry had an estimated turnover of 100 billion US Dollars in 2016. Due to this financial success, gaming services and hardware vendors are receiving increased attention from cyber criminals and hackers. Furthermore, modern consoles show an increased attack surface and risk potential due to their inter-connectedness to the Internet and within the home network.


Task Description

The focus of the thesis is the analysis and assessment of security measures for one modern gaming console. The analysis can be conducted on either the Sony PlayStation 4 (Pro) or the Microsoft XBox One. The architecture of the respective console is to be documented and evaluated. The focus is on examining the attack surface the console offers and the implemented security countermeasures. For this, known attack vectors and exploits are researched and reproduced. Methods for identifying new attack vectors are developed and evaluated on the actual hardware.


Requirements

• Knowledge and practical experience in computer security and reverse engineering is mandatory

• Practical experience with embedded systems

• Practical experience with penetration testing is beneficial
